STORIES OF LIFE 1
Manuel Jesus Rosa is seventy one years old and he has been a fisherman since he was twelve. What led this man to choose this profession was hunger since there wasn’t another kind of job in Monte Gordo and the youngest ones had to support their families. The only possible job was then fishing. One of the most important events in his life was a tempest near Adaluzia – South of Spain. It was such a strong storm that the fisherman that was in charge of the rudder fell asleep of tiredness. With all the wind and rain of that terrible day the boat couldn’t resist and sank. Only on the following day were they helped by other fisherman. During the whole night they were in the water. For him, fishing in the past was harder than today because man had to be very strong to row for so many hours to fish and return back home. Today motorboats help a lot but in his opinion the sea is still very powerful and no man, not ever “the technological man”, can rule the power of the sea!
STORIES OF LIFE 2
Rui Serrano Justo, fourty nine years old, has been a fisherman since the age of fourteen. He chose this profession because there wasn’t another one and also because the sea had always attracted him. One of the events of his sea life had more impact on him was his boat sank im 1982, far away from the beach of Monte Gordo. According to him, this kind of situation is something that fishermen are afraid of but, thank to God, he came to land safe. For him, there was a great development in the world of fishing. Now the boats are better equipped, with motors and that didn’t happen in past. In the past, he told us, they fished very near the seashore. Coming to land was a very exhausting task because they had to row using all their strength. If there wasn’t wind, they couldn’t go to the sea. Today, fishing is very different as there isn’t too much fish and fishermen must go far away from the seashore to fish. “Very often”, he concluded “we come back without fish sine dragnets destroy some sea species. The fish doesn’t come back to areas which don’t give them food”.
